Skilled Visas for Australia (Subclass 189 and 190)
- Skilled migration
Permanent residence for skilled workers
A points-tested skilled visa is the main skilled visa Australia offers. These visas let skilled workers live and work in Australia permanently, without needing an employer sponsor.
The Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) and the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) both start with an expression of interest in SkillSelect. We help you choose the right visa, build your points and prepare an application that is ready the moment you are invited.

Skilled visa FAQs
What is the difference between the 189 and 190 visas?
Both are permanent. The 189 needs no sponsor or nomination, so you rely on your points alone. The 190 needs a state or territory nomination, which adds 5 points, and you agree to live in that state for your first 2 years.
How many points do I need?
The minimum is 65 points, but invitation rounds often need more, depending on your occupation and the program.
How long do I have after I am invited?
You have 60 days from the date of your invitation to lodge your visa application, so it pays to have your documents ready beforehand.
Can I apply from outside Australia?
Yes. You can apply from inside or outside Australia. If you are in Australia, you need to hold a visa that allows you to apply.
Can I include my family?
Yes. You can include your partner and dependent children, and they get the same permanent visa.
Which skilled visa is best for me?
If you have high points and an occupation on the right list, the 189 gives you the most freedom. The 190 adds 5 points through state nomination, and the 491 adds 15 points if you are willing to live and work in a regional area. We compare all three for your occupation and points.
